Everything About Port Aransas Museum: Preserving Island History

The Port Aransas Preservation and Historical Association (PAPHA) is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of Port Aransas. Join us in our mission to collect, preserve, and share the remarkable past of a treasured destination - Port Aransas Museum.

The Birth of Port Aransas Museum: A Joint Effort from PAPHA and the City

The creation of the treasure trove, Port Aransas Museum, was a brainchild of the Port Aransas Preservation & Historical Association and the City of Port Aransas. The PAPHA, established in 2002, was keen on establishing the first historical museum in Port Aransas to preserve and exhibit the town's rich history.

A remarkable achievement for PAPHA was inventorying historic Port Aransas sites. In 2006, PAPHA obtained a matching grant, which helped them conduct a site survey. The grant also helped them earn the Visionaries in Preservation grant from the Texas Historical Commission, a significant step that marked PAPHA's progress as a preservation organization.

The Rebirth of 1910s Kit House into Port Aransas Museum House

The owners of the 1900s kit house - a historic structure - offered to sell it to PAPHA, where it stood. However, this option wasn't viable as the land cost was enormous, and PAPHA had limited funds. Hence, the owners agreed to give it to PAPHA to move to another location.

But the problem was where to move it and how to finance it. Upon being signed over to PAPHA in 2009, the 1910s kit house became Preservation Texas' top 12 most endangered structures. PAPHA applied for grants, hosted fundraisers, and collaborated with the City of Port Aransas, moving companies, and utility firms to fund the move. They raised enough money to move the structure but had no funds for the land.

The Role of PAPHA in Port Aransas

PAPHA is a volunteer group with ambitious goals and an impressive record of accomplishments. Activities such as opening the Port Aransas Museum and Farley Boat Works have continued to garner support among visitors worldwide.

Farley Boat Works is a living exhibit where building boats can be seen in action. The sound of the boat shop is heard when visitors enter the building. The fascinating area attractions such as Port Aransas Museum and the Farley Boat Works remain highly popular institutions in excellent financial condition.

Discover the History and Beauty of the Chapel on the Dunes

Aline B. Carter built the Chapel on the Dunes between 1937 and 1938. The Chapel, which quickly became a beloved community treasure, owes its enchanting beauty to Carter's unique artistic vision. The Chapel is only open for tours in Port Aransas on the first and third Saturday of every month, lasting 30-40 minutes.

If you're looking to visit this stunning piece of history in Port Aransas, you will need to reserve your spot as soon as possible, given the Chapel's popularity and limited capacity. Do not forget to visit the museum and Chapel on the Dunes website to learn about the Chapel's fascinating history and take some unforgettable photographs outside of the Chapel.

After mastering the art of building these beautiful boats, they now offer classes for building small rowing and sailing boats that we intend to use ourselves.
